A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Dr. Lonnie G. Johnson for his innovative contributions to the development of revolutionary energy technology; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Dr. Lonnie G. Johnson is the president and founder of Johnson Research and Development Co., Inc., a company that is developing ground-breaking energy technologies; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Johnson earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and a master's degree in nuclear engineering from Tuskegee University; and

WHEREAS, he served as a guardian of this nation's freedom and liberty with the United States Air Force, rising to the rank of captain, serving as a nuclear research officer with Air Force Systems Command, and was awarded two Air Force Achievement Medals and an Air Force Commendation Medal; and

WHEREAS, as a civilian, he received achievement awards from NASA for his system design work on projects at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory; and

WHEREAS, holding over 100 patents, with 20 more pending, his most famous invention is the SuperSoaker water gun, which he developed in 1989 and was the number one selling toy in America in 1991; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Johnson and his teams are currently working on two new generations of rechargeable battery technology which will address the critical needs of future mobile energy systems through increased energy storage capacity with reduced size, weight, and costs; and

WHEREAS, also being developed by Dr. Johnson and his teams is an all-solid state engine that converts heat directly into electricity with no moving mechanical components, with the potential to revolutionize the global energy market; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Johnson's innovation has been recognized with numerous awards and accolades, including the 2008 Breakthrough Award from Popular Mechanics Magazine and features in Time Magazine, the New York Times, and Inventor's Digest; and

WHEREAS, a community leader, Dr. Johnson serves as chairman of the board of directors of the Georgia Alliance for Children, as a member on the board of directors of the Hank Aaron Chasing the Dream Foundation, and as a member of the 100 Black Men of Atlanta; and

WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the extraordinary accomplishments of this distinguished Georgian be appropriately recognized.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend Dr. Lonnie G. Johnson for his innovations in energy technology and recognize his incredible career in the field of engineering and his community service.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Dr. Lonnie G. Johnson.
