A
RESOLUTION
Honoring
the life and memory of Major Richard "Dick" D. Winters; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the United States of America and the State of Georgia mourn the loss of one of
this nation's most distinguished citizens and patriots with the passing of Major
Richard "Dick" D. Winters on January 2, 2011; and
WHEREAS,
Major Winters was born on January 21, 1918, in Ephrata, Pennsylvania, a beloved
son of Richard and Edith Winters; and
WHEREAS,
he served as a guardian of this nation's freedom and liberty with the United
States Army, valiantly and courageously protecting his fellow Americans during
World War II; and
WHEREAS,
Major Winters commanded Company "E," 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry
Regiment, 101st Airborne Division and parachuted into Normandy during the early
hours of D-Day to fight his way across France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and
into Germany; and
WHEREAS,
while attempting to secure Causeway #2, which linked to Utah Beach, Major
Winters ordered a base-of-fire technique which became a textbook case for
assault on a fixed position and is still taught at West Point Academy today;
and
WHEREAS,
he was recognized with numerous honors and accolades during his military career,
including a Distinguished Service Cross, two Bronze Stars, a Purple Heart, and a
Presidential Unit Citation with one Oak Leaf Cluster; and
WHEREAS,
Major Winters was featured in a number of books and was portrayed in the 2001
HBO miniseries Band of
Brothers by Damian Lewis;
and
WHEREAS, Major Winters was united in love and marriage to his supportive wife, Ethel, and was blessed with two remarkable children; and
WHEREAS, Major Winters was united in love and marriage to his supportive wife, Ethel, and was blessed with two remarkable children; and
WHEREAS,
the passing of this highly decorated American hero leaves an unfillable void in
the hearts and lives of his family and friends; and
WHEREAS,
Major Winters embodied the spirit of service, willing to find meaning in
something greater than himself and serving as a guardian of this nation's
freedom, and it is abundantly fitting and proper that the outstanding
accomplishments of this remarkable and distinguished American be recognized
appropriately.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body express
their deepest and most sincere regret at the passing of Major Richard "Dick" D.
Winters; commend his efficient, effective, unselfish, and dedicated public
service to the citizens of his country; and extend to his family their most
profound appreciation for all members of the United States military who stand
ever ready to lay the ultimate sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Major
Richard "Dick" D. Winters.
