A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Dr. David Satcher; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Dr. David Satcher is currently the Director of the Satcher Health Leadership Institute which was established in 2006 at the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta; and

WHEREAS, the mission of the institute is to develop a diverse group of public health leaders, foster and support leadership strategies, and influence policies toward the reduction and ultimate elimination of disparities in health; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Satcher was sworn in as the 16th Surgeon General of the United States in 1998 and served until 2002; and

WHEREAS, he has served as assistant secretary for health in the Department of Health and Human Services, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and new National Center for Primary Care at the Morehouse School of Medicine, and administrator of the Toxic Substances of Disease Registry; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Satcher graduated from Morehouse College in 1963 and received his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from Case Western Reserve University; and

WHEREAS, he is currently a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society, the Institute of Medicine, National Academy of Sciences; the 100 Black Men of Atlanta, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences; and a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American College of Preventive Medicine, and the American College of Physicians; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Satcher serves on the board of directors of Johnson and Johnson, MetLife, Kaiser Family Foundation, United Way of Greater Atlanta, and the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta and occupies the Poussaint-Satcher-Cosby Chair in Mental Health at the Morehouse School of Medicine; and

WHEREAS, he has received over 40 honorary degrees and numerous distinguished honors; and

WHEREAS, an avid runner, rower, and gardener, Dr. Satcher believes in improving public health policy and is committed to eliminating health disparities; and

WHEREAS, a man with a strong sense of an unyielding desire to help those in need, Dr. Satcher personifies dedication, intelligence, and a strong work ethic that serve as an example to all.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend Dr. David Satcher on his outstanding service to the State of Georgia and his many accomplishments in the medical field.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Dr. David Satcher.
