A
RESOLUTION
Honoring
the life and memory of Senator Robert Brown; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia mourns the immeasurable loss of one of its most
distinguished citizens with the passing of former Senator Robert Brown on
December 8, 2011; and
WHEREAS,
a graduate of Mercer University in Macon, he went on to be a strong advocate for
the school and a valiant fighter for education and opportunity for everyone, as
evidenced by his key role in creating the HOPE Scholarship; and
WHEREAS,
Senator Brown was a servant leader, never thinking of himself, but always of the
people of this state and their needs, especially children, the less fortunate,
and the disadvantaged; and
WHEREAS,
Senator Brown was heavily involved in the civil rights movement in Macon, where
he repeatedly marched for equal rights and jobs for African Americans, and was a
civil rights pioneer in the 1960s and 1970s; and
WHEREAS,
he served three terms as a member of the Board of Education of Bibb County
before his election in 1991 as Bibb County's first black Senator since
Reconstruction; and he served 20 years in the state Senate and was elected
Minority Leader in 2005; and
WHEREAS,
he lived for politics and dedicated his entire life to the betterment of his
fellow citizens and the State of Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
he was known to his colleagues as a bright, dependable, respected man who was
the most loyal political friend anyone could ever have;
and
WHEREAS, Senator Brown loved his state, his community, and his native Macon, spearheading legislative efforts to save the Douglass Theatre and help the Tubman African American Museum; and
WHEREAS, he gave inspiration to many through his high ideals, morals, and deep concern for his fellow citizens, and the devotion, patience, and understanding he demonstrated to his colleagues, associates, and constituents were admired by others; and
WHEREAS, Senator Brown loved his state, his community, and his native Macon, spearheading legislative efforts to save the Douglass Theatre and help the Tubman African American Museum; and
WHEREAS, he gave inspiration to many through his high ideals, morals, and deep concern for his fellow citizens, and the devotion, patience, and understanding he demonstrated to his colleagues, associates, and constituents were admired by others; and
WHEREAS,
he was a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for
integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness and, by the example he made of
his life, he made this world a better place in which to live; and
WHEREAS,
a compassionate and generous man, Robert Brown will long be remembered for his
love of family and friendship, and this loyal Senator, citizen, and friend will
be missed by all who had the great fortune of knowing him.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in
honoring the life and memory of Senator Robert Brown and express their deepest
and most sincere regret at his passing.

IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to family of Senator Robert
Brown.
