A RESOLUTION


Commending United Technologies Corporation and recognizing February 23, 2012, as United Technologies Corporation Employee Scholar Day at the capitol; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, United Technologies Corporation (UTC) provides innovative, high-technology products and services to the aerospace and building systems industries worldwide; and

WHEREAS, UTC's industry leading businesses include Otis elevators and escalators; UTC Climate, Controls, and Security, which includes Carrier heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems, and a broad range of fire safety and security solutions from leading brands, such as Kidde and Chubb; Sikorsky aircraft; and UTC Propulsion and Aerospace Systems, which includes Pratt and Whitney aircraft engines and Hamilton Sundstrand aerospace and industrial products; and

WHEREAS, UTC employs over 200,000 people worldwide, including approximately 75,000 people in the United States and approximately 2,000 people in the State of Georgia; and

WHEREAS, UTC purchases products and services valued at over $300 million annually from approximately 1,400 Georgia based suppliers; and

WHEREAS, UTC established its Employee Scholar Program in 1996 to provide lifelong learning to its employees by giving them access to education to stay current in their chosen field or enable new career opportunities; and

WHEREAS, the Employee Scholar Program is one of the most comprehensive, company sponsored, employee education programs in the world; and

WHEREAS, the Employee Scholar Program pays for tuition, academic fees, and books at approved educational institutions; makes payments directly to the educational institution to minimize out of pocket costs; allows employees to obtain a degree in any field, whether or not it is related to their job; and provides eligible employees up to three hours of paid time off to study per week; and

WHEREAS, UTC has invested $1 billion to further its employees' education, $11 million of which went to Georgia, with more than 32,500 degrees that have been awarded to employees in over 50 countries, 500 of which went to Georgia based employees, and currently has 10,000 employees participating in the program worldwide, over 150 of who are from Georgia; and

WHEREAS, numerous Georgia based institutions of higher learning have participated in and benefited from the UTC Employee Scholar Program; and

WHEREAS, UTC's investment in its employees is an investment in Georgia's future and its economy and is worthy of recognition.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend the outstanding contributions of United Technologies Corporation to higher education and to the State of Georgia and recognize February 23, 2012, as United Technologies Corporation Employee Scholar Day at the capitol.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to United Technologies Corporation.
