A
RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending the D.L. Gorham Club; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
established in 1954 by the pastor of the Holsey Temple Christian Methodist
Episcopal Church, the D.L. Gorham Club works tirelessly to enhance the lives of
children in the community and throughout the state; and
WHEREAS,
Pastor Gorham, along with advisors Jerolene Bell and Kathryn Pitts Jasper,
created the organization to work in harmony with the leadership and programs of
the church, assisting in the spreading of fellowship and good works;
and
WHEREAS,
named the Holsey Junior Club until 1979, the club, under the leadership of
president Dorothy Rutland, changed its name in order to honor its founding
pastor, D.L. Gorham of the Holsey Temple Christian Methodist Episcopal Church;
and
WHEREAS,
through spiritual formation and recreation, the D.L. Gorham Club has been
instrumental to the church's many youth-focused programs, helping to uplift and
inspire the future leaders of the community; and
WHEREAS,
among the many benevolent deeds of the club, the D.L. Gorham Club has assisted
in efforts to maintain properties of the church, furnished necessary supplies,
and created an atmosphere of peace, love, and hope in their beautiful decoration
of the church during the Christmas season; and
WHEREAS,
the D.L. Gorham Club current and past members include Rheba Bryant, Delores
Cook, Rosa Dunn, Connie Franks, Beatrice Hill, Ernestine Hudson, Nettie
Johnston, Inez LaVant, Susie J. Mathis, Joan McCord, and Jewel Price; with
charter members Obie Bailey, Ruby Dunn, Alice Ingram, Leola Jordan, and Laura
Winn; and
WHEREAS,
the outstanding commitment of the members of the D.L. Gorham Club and their
charitable and gracious acts on behalf of others is worthy of appropriate
recognition.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body commend the D.L. Gorham Club on the decades of effective, unselfish,
and dedicated service it has provided to the community.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the D.L.
Gorham Club.
