A
RESOLUTION
Commending
the children of the world and recognizing August as International Children's
Month; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
the concept of a Universal Children's Day was adopted by the United Nations
General Assembly in 1954 and was established to encourage all countries to
institute a day to promote mutual exchange and understanding among children and
to promote the welfare of the world's children; and
WHEREAS,
the Convention of the Rights of the Child was signed on November 20, 1989, and
has since been ratified by 191 countries; and
WHEREAS,
the first Children's Day was celebrated in Turkey on April 23, 1929;
and
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia recognizes the importance of the world's children and the
educational and social importance of studying and understanding the issues
facing the world's children; and
WHEREAS,
it further recognizes that it is important to encourage Georgia's schools to
learn about children around the world and explore the backgrounds and cultures
of the world's children and gain an appreciation for how special all children
are to the world and its future.
NOW
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body recognize August as International Children's Month.
