A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending the Alpha Theta Zeta Chapter of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority is an international, historically black Greek letter sorority and a member of the National Pan-Hellenic Council; and

WHEREAS, Zeta Phi Beta was founded on January 16, 1920, at Howard University in Washington, D.C., by five young coeds known as the five pearls, Arizona Cleaver Stemons, Myrtle Tyler Faithful, Viola Tyler Goings, Fannie Pettie Watts, and Pearl Neal; and

WHEREAS, based on the principles of Scholarship, Service, Sisterly Love, and Finer Womanhood, Zeta Phi Beta has chartered hundreds of chapters and initiated thousands of women around the world; and

WHEREAS, Zeta Phi Beta's national and local programs include the National Educational Foundation, which offers scholarship grants to students who want to pursue higher education; the Stork's Nest, a partnership with the March of Dimes that encourages young ladies to seek prenatal care; and Z-Hope, an outreach service program which stands for Zetas Helping Other People Excel; and

WHEREAS, the Alpha Theta Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta was organized on July 1, 1939, by Viola C. Holbrooks and Almeda Ford at Valdosta State University; and

WHEREAS, charter members for the Alpha Theta Zeta Chapter were Reatha M. Gibbs Delaware, Ola Bass Dingle, Jessie Moody Gibbs, Viola C. Holbrooks, Lillie G. Jones, Mettalla W. Mareee, Margaret H. Stewart, E. Cecile Walker, Nancy H. Walker, Kathleen Williams, and Nellie W. Zeigler; and

WHEREAS, the Alpha Theta Zeta Chapter of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority continues a rich tradition of service and fellowship and the outstanding accomplishments of this fine organization are worthy of recognition.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend the members of the Alpha Theta Zeta Chapter of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority for their service to the community and their commitment to the principles of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Alpha Theta Zeta Chapter of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority.
