Honoring the life and memory of the Honorable Jack Hays Morgan, Sr.; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens with the passing of the Honorable Jack Hays Morgan, Sr., on March 3, 2009; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Morgan was born on May 2, 1919, in Newton County, Georgia, and was known as a charitable, fair minded, and dedicated community leader and a forward-thinking entrepreneur his entire life; and

WHEREAS, as a young man with no resources to his name, Mr. Morgan took any work offered, from picking peaches to delivering bread, until his first break came in the form of a job at Bibb Manufacturing Company in Porterdale, Georgia, where he would meet his future bride, Barbara Mizell Davis; and

WHEREAS, after a wartime stint in the United States Navy, Mr. Morgan began farming his beloved acreage on the Alcovy River and founded Morgan Timber Company, now 65 years old, to usher in Newton County's post-war development and building boom; and

WHEREAS, over the years, Mr. Morgan expanded his forestry and agricultural pursuits to include wide-ranging retail, development, and real estate ventures; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Morgan's lifelong interest in politics and public service gave rise to his election to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1961 and his election as Newton County Commission Chairman in 1970, a post later held by his son, the late Davis Carter Morgan, and today by his daughter-in-law, Kathryn G. Morgan; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Morgan was a devoted man of faith and an active member of First United Methodist Church of Covington and a loyal supporter of Luther Hays Presbyterian Church in Hayston, Georgia; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Morgan was united in love and marriage to Barbara Davis for 64 years and was blessed with eight children, 17 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Morgan will long be remembered for his love of family and friends, and this loyal husband, father, and neighbor to all will be sorely missed by those who had the great fortune of knowing him.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body join in honoring the life and memory of the Honorable Jack Hays Morgan, Sr., and express their deepest and most sincere regret at his passing.
