RESOLUTION
Honoring
the life and memory of the Honorable Jack Hays Morgan, Sr.; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens
with the passing of the Honorable Jack Hays Morgan, Sr., on March 3, 2009;
and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Morgan was born on May 2, 1919, in Newton County, Georgia, and was known as
a charitable, fair minded, and dedicated community leader and a forward-thinking
entrepreneur his entire life; and
WHEREAS,
as a young man with no resources to his name, Mr. Morgan took any work offered,
from picking peaches to delivering bread, until his first break came in the form
of a job at Bibb Manufacturing Company in Porterdale, Georgia, where he would
meet his future bride, Barbara Mizell Davis; and
WHEREAS,
after a wartime stint in the United States Navy, Mr. Morgan began farming his
beloved acreage on the Alcovy River and founded Morgan Timber Company, now 65
years old, to usher in Newton County's post-war development and building boom;
and
WHEREAS,
over the years, Mr. Morgan expanded his forestry and agricultural pursuits to
include wide-ranging retail, development, and real estate ventures;
and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Morgan's lifelong interest in politics and public service gave rise to his
election to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1961 and his election as
Newton County Commission Chairman in 1970, a post later held by his son, the
late Davis Carter Morgan, and today by his daughter-in-law, Kathryn G. Morgan;
and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Morgan was a devoted man of faith and an active member of First United
Methodist Church of Covington and a loyal supporter of Luther Hays Presbyterian
Church in Hayston, Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Morgan was united in love and marriage to Barbara Davis for 64 years and was
blessed with eight children, 17 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren;
and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Morgan will long be remembered for his love of family and friends, and this
loyal husband, father, and neighbor to all will be sorely missed by those who
had the great fortune of knowing him.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body join in honoring the life and memory of the Honorable Jack Hays
Morgan, Sr., and express their deepest and most sincere regret at his
passing.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of
Jack Hays Morgan, Sr.
