A RESOLUTION

Recognizing and commending the Georgia National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Program, Fort Stewart and Fort Gordon campuses; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Fort Gordon Youth ChalleNGe Academy (YCA) recently graduated its 10,000th cadet, an achievement which has been attained by only two other states; and

WHEREAS, Georgia's YCA is part of the National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Program that intervenes in and helps reclaim the lives of at-risk youth; and

WHEREAS, the Youth ChalleNGe Program produces graduates with the values, skills, education, self-confidence, and self-discipline necessary to succeed as adults; and

WHEREAS, Fort Gordon's YCA 10,000th graduate was Augusta resident Joshua Carroll, who joined the program to pursue his education, gain discipline, and create better opportunities for himself; and

WHEREAS, this YCA graduating class was the program's largest in its history, with 250 cadets, who donated nearly 15,000 hours of service to the community; and

WHEREAS, most cadet graduates of the YCA receive their GED, with at least 53 percent joining Georgia's work force, 23 percent going on to college or vocational school, and 20 percent entering military service; and

WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the extraordinary accomplishments of the Youth ChalleNGe Program be appropriately recognized.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend the Fort Stewart and Fort Gordon Youth ChalleNGe academies for uplifting the lives of countless young Georgians and congratulate its staff, students, and alumni on the momentous occasion of graduating its 10,000th cadet.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to Frank Williams, state director of the Georgia National Guard Youth ChalleNGe academies; Lieutenant Colonel (Ret) Zimmerman, director of the Fort Gordon campus; and Dr. Bob Hughes, director of the Fort Stewart campus.
