A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending United States Attorney General Mr. Eric H. Holder, Jr.; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, on February 3, 2009, Mr. Eric H. Holder, Jr., made history when he was sworn in as the 82nd Attorney General of the United States, becoming the first African American Attorney General; and

WHEREAS, this groundbreaking and monumental moment was made possible through Mr. Holder's nomination by President Barack Obama; and

WHEREAS, a native of New York City, Mr. Holder was educated in the public school system, graduating from Stuyvesant High School, where he earned a Regents Scholarship; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Holder earned a bachelor's degree in American history from Columbia College in 1973 and a law degree from Columbia University in 1976; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Holder served as a law clerk for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, devoting innumerable hours of his time, talents, and energy toward providing representation and advocacy for the African American community; and

WHEREAS, he diligently and conscientiously served with honor and distinction with the United States Department of Justice's Criminal Division; and

WHEREAS, in 1988, Mr. Holder was nominated by President Ronald Reagan to be an associate judge of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, where he earned a reputation for fair minded and reasoned judicial decisions; and

WHEREAS, President William Clinton named Mr. Holder Deputy Attorney General of the United States in 1997, making him the first African American to hold this prestigious position; and

WHEREAS, his foresight, vision, and leadership skills have earned him the respect of his colleagues and associates, and his commitment to the judicial system of this nation is worthy of recognition.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend Mr. Eric H. Holder, Jr., on his stellar achievements in the legal profession, extend their most heartfelt gratitude for his many contributions to the United States, and congratulate him upon his history making appointment as Attorney General of the United States.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mr. Eric H. Holder, Jr.
