RESOLUTION
Honoring
the life and memory of Mr. W.J. "Bill" Chant; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia lost one its finest and most distinguished citizens, Mr.
W.J. "Bill" Chant, on March 15, 2009; and
WHEREAS,
born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Mr. Chant was well known throughout his
community and this state for his civic service and activism in Savannah,
Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Chant served as a guardian of this nation's freedom and liberty in the
United States Navy aboard the
U.S.S. Jack W. Wilkie,
"One Stack Jack," and was retired from his
position with Continental Field Machining South; and
WHEREAS,
dedicated to the community and people of Port Wentworth, Mr. Chant served as
mayor, a little league baseball and football coach, a Scout Master for Troop
100, and was employed with the Port Wentworth Police Department;
and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Chant also served with the Motorcycle Division of the Savannah Police
Department and was a member of the Harley Owners Group; and
WHEREAS,
a man of deep and abiding faith, Mr. Chant was a 54 year member of Our Lady of
Lourdes Catholic Church and was the recipient of the Gartland Service Award for
the Diocese of Savannah in 2002; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Chant was united in love and marriage to his wonderful wife, Mary Alice, and
he was blessed with three remarkable sons, Tom, Johnny, and Timmy, and two
beautiful granddaughters, Aubrey and Madeline; and
WHEREAS,
a compassionate and generous man, Mr. Chant will long be remembered for his love
of motorcycles, family, and friendship, and this loyal husband, father,
grandfather, and friend will be missed by all who had the great fortune of
knowing him.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body join in honoring the life and memory of Mr. W.J. "Bill" Chant and
express their deepest and most sincere regret at his passing.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of
Mr. W.J. "Bill" Chant.
