A RESOLUTION


Honoring the life and memory of Mr. John Thomas "Man" Crouch; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its oldest citizens with the passing of Mr. John Thomas "Man" Crouch on March 15, 2009; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Crouch was born on May 12, 1908, in Talbot County, Georgia, and at the age of 101, he was the oldest living resident of Junction City, Georgia; and

WHEREAS, he was employed as a field laborer for Mr. William Harvey Buckner, Sr., and later would commute each day to Fort Benning with brothers William and Charlie Buckner and his brother, Eugene Crouch, to work as a carpenter's assistant for Culpepper Construction Company building army barracks during World War II; and

WHEREAS, after the war, Mr. Crouch worked for the Newton Callier Saw Mill, the James Yancey Logging Company, and retired from the Alexander Saw Mill in Talbotton, Georgia; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Crouch was married to Ida Lee Sanders Crouch, which blessed him with three children, John, Rachel, and Laura; and

WHEREAS, he later married Hattie Searcy Crouch, a union which brought him three children, Louvenia, Paul, and Sam; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Crouch had a unique talent for recycling old building materials for new uses and spent many hours repairing old cars; and

WHEREAS, known for his skill in gardening, Mr. Crouch had a well-deserved reputation for growing excellent and plentiful crops of corn, collards, and turnips, and raising hogs; and

WHEREAS, although Mr. Crouch lived many years of his life in an era when segregation was prevalent, societal norms did not prevent him from making valuable friendships with individuals from all walks of life and from being kind to others; and

WHEREAS, in his later years, it became extremely difficult for Mr. Crouch to hear, yet he maintained his humor, graciousness, and his industrious and energetic spirit until his last days; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Crouch will long be remembered for his love of gardening, the outdoors, family, and friendship, and this loyal father, grandfather, and friend will be missed by all who had the great fortune of knowing him.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body join in honoring the life and memory of Mr. John Thomas "Man" Crouch and express their deepest and most sincere regret at his passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Mr. John Thomas "Man" Crouch.
