A RESOLUTION

Honoring the life and memory of Mrs. Alice Walker Coffin Gill; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia lost one of its finest and most distinguished citizens with the passing of Mrs. Alice Walker Coffin Gill on May 21, 2008; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Gill was born in Cochran, Georgia, on November 22, 1918, and was the beloved daughter of John Augustus and Alice Taylor Walker; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Gill was a graduate of Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville and served as a dedicated educator at Richland Elementary School, Schley County Elementary School, and Southland Academy; and

WHEREAS, in 1939, Mrs. Gill married Charles Austin Coffin, a cotton broker, merchant, and city councilman in Richland, Georgia, and the two were blessed with two children, Charles and Alice; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Coffin passed away unexpectedly during his second term as a state senator for the 12th district of Georgia and Mrs. Gill was elected to fill her husband's unexpired term, making her the second female senator to serve in the Georgia Legislature; and

WHEREAS, in 1953, she married Paul Leon Gill, a banker, pharmacist, and the former mayor of Ellaville, Georgia, and they had two children together, Paula and John; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Gill was elected to serve as the state senator for the 13th district of Georgia and Mrs. Gill accompanied him to Atlanta during the legislative session, keeping active in the political activity of the state; and

WHEREAS, a devoted woman of faith, Mrs. Gill was a member of the Ellaville Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school and was actively involved in community affairs and service; and

WHEREAS, she leaves behind many who will cherish her memory and the wonderful times shared, including her four children and their families, nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, a niece and nephew; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Gill was a woman of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness and, by the example she made of her life, she made this world a better place in which to live; and all who were privileged to know this distinguished Georgian join her family in mourning her loss.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that this body hereby joins in honoring the life and memory of Mrs. Alice Walker Coffin Gill and expressing its appreciation of her many contributions to her community and the State of Georgia.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mrs. Gill's family.
