RESOLUTION
Honoring
the life and memory of Mr. George W. Thompson; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia lost one its finest and most distinguished citizens and
civil rights activists, Mr. George W. Thompson; and
WHEREAS,
born on August 8, 1932, in Atlanta, Georgia, Mr. Thompson was well known
throughout his community and this state for his civic service and activism;
and
WHEREAS,
affectionately known as "GW," Mr. Thompson graduated with honors from Spencer
High School in Columbus, Georgia, and served as a guardian of this nation's
freedom and liberty for four years in the United States Navy; and
WHEREAS,
in 1964, Mr. Thompson joined the City of Atlanta Police Department, where he
served as a night foot patrolman for the Vine City and Perry Homes areas;
and
WHEREAS,
in 1966, Mr. Thompson began his career with General Motors as a security officer
for the Lakewood Branch, where he served for 25 years as a voice of his
co-workers in their battle for equal rights, equal pay, and the end of
discriminatory behavior; and
WHEREAS,
dedicated to uplifting and inspiring the leaders of tomorrow, Mr. Thompson was a
member of the 100 Black Men of the South Metro and was a mentor for the Big
Brothers and Big Sisters organization, adopting his mentee in that program as
his godson; and
WHEREAS,
a man devoted to his faith and his neighbors, Mr. Thompson was an active member
of St. Anthony's de Padua, serving in the church's ministry as treasurer and
helping with the church's partnership with Habitat for Humanity in building
homes for those in need; and
WHEREAS,
a member of the Fayette County Branch of the NAACP, Mr. Thompson served as
chairman of the Legal Redress, Labor, and Industry committees and made a
difference in the lives of many; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Thompson was united in love and marriage to his generous and kind wife,
Evelyn Burks Thompson, and he had been a resident of Peachtree City, Georgia,
for the past 24 years; and
WHEREAS,
a compassionate and giving man, Mr. Thompson will long be remembered for his
love of family and friendship, and this loyal husband, neighbor, and friend will
be missed by all who had the great fortune of knowing him.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body join in honoring the life and memory of Mr. George W. Thompson and
express their deepest and most sincere regret at his passing.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of
Mr. George W. Thompson.
