RESOLUTION
Honoring
the life and memory of Ms. Lela Wright Stone; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens
with the passing of Ms. Lela Wright Stone on December 23, 2010; and
WHEREAS,
Ms. Stone was born in Jefferson County, Georgia, and earned degrees in home
economics and education from Barber-Scotia College and the University of
Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
an educator and advocate, Ms. Stone taught at Boggs Academy and other Burke
County schools for 24 years, serving as the county's first black visiting
teacher and social worker and its first black board member; and
WHEREAS,
in 1985, Ms. Stone helped lead a successful protest to the sale of Boggs Academy
which ultimately resulted in the historic school's restoration; and
WHEREAS,
a woman of deep and abiding faith, Ms. Stone was a member of Augusta's
Belle-Terrace Presbyterian USA Church and the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority;
and
WHEREAS,
Ms. Stone served on the board that restored Augusta's Lucy Craft Laney Museum of
Black History; and
WHEREAS,
she gave inspiration to many through her high ideals, morals, and deep concern
for her fellow citizens, and the devotion, patience, and understanding she
demonstrated to her family and friends were admired by others; and
WHEREAS,
she was a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for
integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness and, by the example she made of
her life, she made this world a better place in which to live; and
WHEREAS,
a compassionate and generous woman, Ms. Stone will long be remembered for her
elegance and talent as a public speaker, and this loyal educator, community
activist, neighbor, and friend will be missed by all who had the great fortune
of knowing her.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body join in honoring the life and memory of Ms. Lela Wright Stone and
express their deepest and most sincere regret at her passing.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of
Ms. Lela Wright Stone.
