RESOLUTION
Commending
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., recognizing March 14, 2011, as Delta Day at
the state capitol, and inviting representatives of the sorority to be recognized
by the House of Representatives; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., is a public service organization founded on
January 13, 1913, by 22 visionary women at Howard University in Washington,
D.C.; and
WHEREAS,
the founding sisters included Osceola Macarthy Adams, Marguerite Young
Alexander, Winona Cargile Alexander, Ethel Cuff Black, Bertha Pitts Campbell,
Zephyr Chisom Carter, Edna Brown Coleman, Jessie McGuire Dent, Frederica Chase
Dodd, Myra Davis Hemmings, Olive Jones, Jimmie Bugg Middleton, Pauline
Oberdorfer Minor, Vashti Turley Murphy, Naomi Sewell Richardson, Mamie Reddy
Rose, Eliza P. Shippen, Florence Letcher Toms, Ethel Carr Watson, Wertie
Blackwell Weaver, Madree Pen White, and Edith Motte Young; and
WHEREAS,
only weeks after its founding, the sorority's first public act was participation
in the Women's Suffrage Movement demanding rights for women, particularly the
right to vote; and
WHEREAS,
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., is a sisterhood of college-educated women
committed to implementing the sorority's mission through its Five Point Program
Thrust: Educational Development, Economic Development, Political Awareness and
Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and International Awareness and
Involvement; and
WHEREAS,
the sorority recently celebrated 98 years of exemplary service and support to
local communities, leading dialogues on public policy issues, supporting quality
education, producing new projects to stimulate current and future economic
growth, and improving the lives of the people in their communities;
and
WHEREAS,
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., has instituted the Georganna Sinkfield Servant
Leadership Award in recognition of her service as the longest serving female in
the history of the Georgia General Assembly; and
WHEREAS,
numerous individuals have contributed to the success of Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority, Inc., including Cynthia Butler McIntyre as the 24th national
president, Donna Bowan as chairperson, Yovancha Lewis-Samuels as chairperson of
DDAC 2011, Reverend Gwendolyn Boyd as the 22nd national president and a keynote
speaker, Lois J. Gilder as the interim regional director, Janis Mathis, Esq., as
social action commissioner of the southern region, and Beverly Smith as national
secretary.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body commend the efforts of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., for its
continued commitment to public service, recognize its work in making the State
of Georgia a better place to live and work, recognize March 14, 2011, as Delta
Day at the state capitol, and invite representatives of the sorority to be
recognized by the House of Representatives at a date and time to be designated
by the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to Delta Sigma
Theta Sorority, Inc., and the above-named individuals.
