A RESOLUTION


Honoring the life and memory of Mr. Mike Sheffield; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens with the passing of Mr. Mike Sheffield on February 19, 2011; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Sheffield was born on November 3, 1949, in Atlanta, Georgia, a beloved son of Walter and Lucy Sheffield; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of North Fulton High School, Mr. Sheffield earned a bachelors degree from Wake Forest University and a law degree from Emory University; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Sheffield began his distinguished legal career with the DeKalb County District Attorney's Office and worked for the DeKalb County Public Defenders Office for 15 years before entering private practice as a criminal defense attorney; and

WHEREAS, a highly respected member of the legal community, Mr. Sheffield was a proud member of the Federalist Society, past president of the Gwinnett County Bar Association and the DeKalb Bar Association, a member of the State Bar of Georgia's Board of Governors and the Georgia Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys, and a fellow of the Lawyers Foundation of Georgia; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Sheffield was a two-time Georgia Court of Appeals candidate who was known for his unflappable, easy going personality and an amazing advocate who approached issues with a smile and positive attitude; and

WHEREAS, a community leader, Mr. Sheffield was active with the Decatur Lions Club, the Norcross Rotary Club, and Perimeter Church in Johns Creek; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Sheffield was united in love and marriage to his wife, Susan, and was blessed with two remarkable children, Olivia and Matthew; and

WHEREAS, he was a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness and, by the example he made of his life, he made this world a better place in which to live; and

WHEREAS, a compassionate and generous man, Mr. Sheffield will long be remembered for his love of family and friendship, and this loyal husband, father, and friend will be missed by all who had the great fortune of knowing him.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body join in honoring the life and memory of Mr. Mike Sheffield and express their deepest and most sincere regret at his passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Mr. Mike Sheffield.
