House Resolution 432
By: Representatives Cooper of the 41st, Jacobs of the 80th, Peake of the 137th, Smith of the 70th, Rynders of the 152nd, and others

A RESOLUTION

Commending the Cherokee Rose Foundation and proclaiming February, 2011, Cancer Screening and Early Detection Month in Georgia and inviting the Cherokee Rose Foundation to be recognized by the House of Representatives; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, cancer screening and early detection save lives; and

WHEREAS, currently there are early detection screening tests for colon, prostate, skin, breast, and cervical cancers; and

WHEREAS, it is advised that all Georgians discuss early detection with their healthcare provider because factors such as age, gender, lifestyle, and family history of cancer affect the frequency and age at which cancer screenings should be initiated; and

WHEREAS, reducing risk of cancer through simple, everyday choices such as limiting exposure to the sun, eating a healthy, plant-based diet, getting daily physical activity, and refraining from using tobacco products are keys to good health and play a significant role in reducing the risk of developing many types of cancers; and

WHEREAS, cancer is most treatable and survivable when it is detected early; and medical experts have developed screening guidelines to detect some types of cancers at their earliest, most treatable stage and often before any signs or symptoms develop; and

WHEREAS, early detection screening tests, self-examination, and knowledge of family health history are also important for early detection.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body heartily support all measures to reduce the risk and the incidence of cancer among citizens of Georgia, commend the Cherokee Rose Foundation for its efforts to educate Georgians about the dangers of cancer and the benefits of screening and early detection, proclaim February, 2011, Cancer Screening and Early Detection Month in Georgia, and invite the Cherokee Rose Foundation to be recognized by the House of Representatives at a date and time to be designated by the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Cherokee Rose Foundation.
