A RESOLUTION

Honoring the life and achievements of Mrs. Amelia Boynton-Robinson; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, now a glorious 99 years old, Mrs. Amelia Boynton-Robinson was born in Savannah, Georgia, in August 18, 1911, one of seven children; and

WHEREAS, her loving parents raised her in a business environment, but the family rules were to first, pray; second, always help and apply compassion and understanding to others; third, stand up for what you believe is morally right; and fourth, become self-sufficient by owning your own business; and

WHEREAS, her lifelong dedication to service to others began in 1920 when at the age of nine, she rode in a horse and buggy with her mother handing out leaflets during the Women's Suffrage Movement, encouraging women to vote; and

WHEREAS, she dedicated her life to raising the downtrodden and creating opportunities and destroying social barriers so that all people might have an equal chance to succeed and get ahead regardless of the color of their skin or where they came from; and

WHEREAS, she helped organize the Selma to Montgomery marches, paying a high price for the sake of others on Bloody Sunday, where she was brutally beaten nearly to death and gassed so badly that her beautiful singing voice was forever impaired; and

WHEREAS, ultimately, right prevailed, as it always does, and not only did she help win the right to vote and participate in the political process for all people, she showed the true Christian spirit of forgiveness when, in 2007, she attended the funeral of Sheriff Jim Clark, the man responsible for several of her beatings, including the one in Selma; and
WHEREAS, it is only right and proper that this heroic woman be recognized and commended for her incredible years of service and suffering on behalf of her people and all people.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body honor the life and achievements of Mrs. Amelia Boynton-Robinson.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mrs. Amelia Boynton-Robinson.
