WHEREAS, located 11 miles west of Savannah, Georgia, Port Wentworth is a city known for its patriotism; and

WHEREAS, during the Vietnam War era, Port Wentworth's Mayor Preston B. Edwards, a World War II veteran and Purple Heart recipient, began Stand Up for America, which included a parade and other Americanism gatherings to build up waning patriotism; and

WHEREAS, over the last 38 years, the Stand Up for America program has grown into a major event that draws visitors to Port Wentworth from across the state; and

WHEREAS, today the Stand Up for America event includes a parade, arts and crafts, rides, food, fireworks, a fishing tournament, and a street dance; and

WHEREAS, Port Wentworth is one of just three cities in the United States to become a Purple Heart City, and the effort was led by Al and Rose Cook; and

WHEREAS, the city has plans to build a veterans park with a Purple Heart monument to serve as the park's focal point; and

WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the outstanding patriotism of this fine city and its numerous contributions to the veterans of this state be appropriately recognized.
