RESOLUTION
Commending
the European Union and recognizing May 9, 2010, as Europe Day and May 9-16,
2010, as Europe Week at the Georgia State Capitol; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
60 years ago on May 9, 1950, the Schuman Declaration proposed the creation of an
organized association of European countries as an indispensable contribution to
peaceful relations in the world and that association has grown into today's
European Union (EU) and one of the United States' closest partners and allies;
and
WHEREAS,
each year, the countries of Europe and countries where the EU is represented
celebrate this joyous event with many festivities in recognition of European
integration and the subsequent peace and prosperity which it has achieved;
and
WHEREAS,
there is a strong bond of friendship and heritage between the citizens of
Georgia and the European Union member states and Georgians should welcome
opportunities to further develop these relationships at the business, cultural,
and academic levels; and
WHEREAS,
the economic partnership between Georgia and the EU is a significant
relationship with Georgia exports to the EU totaling approximately $6.5 billion
per year and the EU providing approximately 54 percent of the total foreign
direct investments in Georgia which provides over 113,000 jobs; and
WHEREAS,
Georgia is privileged to host representatives from member states of the EU,
including career consulates and representatives from their trade offices;
and
WHEREAS,
this state proudly serves as a host for numerous bi-national chambers of
commerce and cultural organizations such as the Goethe Institute and the
Alliance Francais which foster business and cultural connections between Georgia
and the EU; and
WHEREAS,
Georgia's universities play a valuable role in establishing Georgia's burgeoning
internationalization and, particularly, the European Union Center of Excellence
at the Georgia Institute of Technology has promoted a greater understanding of
the importance of the EU and its partnership with the United States;
and
WHEREAS,
Georgia should join the international community in marking May 9-16, 2010, as
the first Europe Week to be celebrated under the new Lisbon Treaty, ratified by
the 27 member states of the EU.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body join together in celebrating the European Union and the importance of
the State of Georgia's relationship with its EU partners by recognizing May 9,
2010, as Europe Day and May 9-16, 2010, as Europe Week at the Georgia State
Capitol.

IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Ambassador
Angelos Pangratis.
