RESOLUTION
Honoring
the life and memory of Ms. Selma McDonald Medlock Cheeley; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens
with the passing of Ms. Selma McDonald Medlock Cheeley on February 10, 2012;
and
WHEREAS,
Ms. Cheeley was born on September 2, 1932, a beloved twin daughter of Robert
David and Selma McDonald Medlock; and
WHEREAS,
a woman of deep and abiding faith, Ms. Cheeley was an active member of Buford
First United Methodist Church, where she faithfully taught Sunday school;
and
WHEREAS,
Ms. Cheeley regularly delivered meals and clothing to Buford's poor and
homebound, cooked meals at church and the Kiwanis Club, served as president of
the Buford Women's Club, and helped launch the state-wide Plant a Tree Day
program as president of the Georgia Garden Club in the early 1970's; and
WHEREAS,
a graduate of Norcross High School, Ms. Cheeley earned a bachelor's degree from
Georgia State University and helped lead efforts for peaceful integration of the
Buford School System; and
WHEREAS,
Ms. Cheeley was blessed with the love and support of her children, Margaret and
Joseph E. Cheeley III, Robert and Lisa Cheeley, Susan Medlock Cheeley, John
Philip Cheeley, and Brandi and James Nathan Cheeley; and
WHEREAS,
she was the proud grandmother of Kristin, Justin, David, Amelia, Harrison,
Olivia, and Gunter, and great-grandmother of Brynn Elise; and
WHEREAS,
she gave inspiration to many through her high ideals, morals, and deep concern
for her fellow citizens, and the devotion, patience, and understanding she
demonstrated to her family and friends were admired by others; and
WHEREAS,
she was a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for
integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness and, by the example she made of
her life, she made this world a better place in which to live; and
WHEREAS,
a compassionate and generous woman, Ms. Cheeley will long be remembered for her
love of family and friendship, and this loyal sister, mother, grandmother,
great-grandmother, and friend will be missed by all who had the great fortune of
knowing her.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body join in honoring the life and memory of Ms. Selma McDonald Medlock
Cheeley and express their deepest and most sincere regret at her
passing.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of
Ms. Selma McDonald Medlock Cheeley.
