RESOLUTION
Honoring
the life and memory of Honorable Harry D. Dixon, Sr.; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens
with the passing of Honorable Harry D. Dixon, Sr. on March 12, 2012;
and
WHEREAS,
Representative Dixon was born on March 24, 1925, a beloved son of the late
Reverend Huey Dixon and Mattie Woodard Dixon; and
WHEREAS,
he served as a guardian of this nation's freedom and liberty with the United
States Merchant Marines as a seaman, valiantly and courageously protecting his
fellow Americans during World War II and during the Normandy Invasion;
and
WHEREAS,
after the war he worked as an engineer with the Atlantic Coast Railroad until
his retirement in 1985; and
WHEREAS,
he was elected by the citizens of Ware County as a Representative in the Georgia
General Assembly in 1962 where he also served Clinch County, Charlton County,
and Camden County until 2000; and
WHEREAS,
Representative Dixon was appointed to various committees, including the
Appropriations Committee, Insurance Committee, and Regulated Beverages
Committee; and
WHEREAS,
in 2000 he was selected by his fellow legislators to serve as a board member of
the Georgia Department of Transportation until 2005; and
WHEREAS,
his many accomplishments include spearheading the creation of The Lakes at Laura
S. Walker Golf Course and the expansion of Ware Correctional Institution, as
well as assisting with the promotion of the Okefenokee Heritage Center, Waycross
Area Community Theater, and Southern Forest World;
and
WHEREAS, Representative Dixon was famous for his exceptional ability to portray colorful and illustrative stories to make his point and is remembered by everyone for his wonderful sense of humor; and

WHEREAS,
Representative Dixon was united in love and marriage to the late Ruth Starling
for 49 years and was blessed with a remarkable son, Harry D. "Donnie" Dixon,
Jr., and two wonderful grandchildren, Kelly Elizabeth Dixon and Harry D. Dixon
III; and
WHEREAS,
he was a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for
integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness and, by the example he made of
his life, he made this world a better place in which to live; and
WHEREAS,
a compassionate and generous man, Representative Dixon will long be remembered
for his love of family and friendship, and this loyal son, husband, father,
grandfather, and friend will be missed by all who had the great fortune of
knowing him.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body join in honoring the life and memory of Honorable Harry D. Dixon, Sr.,
and express their deepest and most sincere regret at his passing.

IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of
Honorable Harry D. Dixon, Sr.
