RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Mr. Max Cleland; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Mr. Max Cleland was born on August 24, 1942, in Atlanta, Georgia, a beloved son
of Hugh and Juanita Cleland; and
WHEREAS,
he grew up in Lithonia and graduated from Lithonia High School in 1960;
and
WHEREAS,
he graduated from Stetson University in 1964 and earned his master's degree from
Emory University in 1968; and
WHEREAS,
he served as a guardian of this nation's freedom and liberty with the United
States Army from 1965 to 1968 and earned the rank of captain; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Cleland was wounded in combat in Vietnam, recovered, and became "strong at
the broken places"; and
WHEREAS,
he served in the Georgia State Senate from 1971 to 1975, was an administrator
for the United States Veterans Administration from 1977 to 1981, was Georgia's
Secretary of State from 1982 to 1996, and was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1996
and served from 1997 to 2004; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Cleland is a tireless advocate for veterans, service members, and their
families, and currently serves as secretary for the American Battle Monuments
Commission; and
WHEREAS,
his significant organizational and leadership talents, his remarkable patience
and diplomacy, his keen sense of vision, his underlying loyalty and lasting
friendship, and his sensitivity to the needs of the citizens of this state have
earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues and associates;
and
WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the outstanding accomplishments of this distinguished Georgian be appropriately recognized.

NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body commend Mr. Max Cleland for his efficient, effective, unselfish, and
dedicated public service to the State of Georgia.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mr. Max
Cleland.
