A RESOLUTION


Honoring the life and memory of Mr. Eddie Phillips; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens with the passing of Mr. Eddie Phillips on February 7, 2010; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Phillips was born on June 15, 1941, in DeKalb County, Georgia, a beloved son of the late Edward and Mary Phillips; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of Avondale High School, Mr. Phillips served as a guardian of this nation's freedom and liberty with the United States Air Force Reserves and was called to active duty during the Cuban Missile Crisis; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Phillips began his career in the insurance industry, working for Liberty National Insurance Company in Atlanta and Independent Life in Covington, before entering the field of real estate, attending night classes to earn a brokers license and opening Key Realty Company in Covington; and

WHEREAS, he became a State of Georgia Certified General Real Estate Appraiser, served on the Tax Assessors Board of Newton County, and provided leadership and guidance to the National Association of Master Appraisers as treasurer for the Georgia Chapter; and

WHEREAS, committed to uplifting the lives of his neighbors in Newton County, Mr. Phillips was a member of the Tree Board and Parking Authority of the City of Covington, a past member of the Lions Club, and a past Exalted Ruler of the Covington Elks Lodges #1806; and

WHEREAS, a man of deep and abiding faith, Mr. Phillips was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Covington, where he was a long-time member and had served as a Sunday school teacher; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Phillips was united in love and marriage for 48 wonderful years to his adoring wife, Carolyn, and was blessed with the love of his daughters and sons-in-law, Dana and Tommy Knight, Sherie and Tim McCart, and Paige and Jim Alexander; and five grandchildren, Travis, Austin, Zack, Alana, and Laura; and

WHEREAS, he was a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness and, by the example he made of his life, he made this world a better place in which to live; and

WHEREAS, a compassionate and generous man, Mr. Phillips will long be remembered for his family and friendship, and this loyal husband, brother, father, grandfather, and friend will be missed by all who had the great fortune of knowing him.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body join in honoring the life and memory of Mr. Eddie Phillips and express their deepest and most sincere regret at his passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Mr. Eddie Phillips.
