RESOLUTION
Commending
Zeta Phi Beta Sorority; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Zeta Phi Beta Sorority is an international, historically black Greek-lettered
sorority and a member of the National Pan Hellenic Council; and
WHEREAS,
Zeta Phi Beta was founded on January 16, 1920, at Howard University in
Washington, D.C., and was first incorporated on March 30, 1923, by sorority
members Myrtle Tyler, Gladys Warrington, Joanna Houston, Josephine Johnson, and
O. Goldia Smith; and
WHEREAS,
the sorority is organized into over 800 chapters in eight intercontinental
regions including North America, Africa, Europe, and Asia; and
WHEREAS,
Zeta Phi Beta has several outstanding auxiliary organizations, including Amicae,
Archonettes, Amicettes, Pearlettes, and the Zeta Male Network; and
WHEREAS,
Zeta Phi Beta has partnered with the March of Dimes since 1971 with the Stork's
Nest Program, which encourages low-income pregnant women to participate in
healthy behaviors during pregnancy through incentive and educational programs in
order to decrease the incidences of birth defects and lower the infant mortality
rate; and
WHEREAS,
in 1975, the sorority established the National Educational Foundation of Zeta
Phi Beta Sorority, a trust which awards scholarship grants, conducts community
educational programs and activities, and engages in scholarship related
research; and
WHEREAS,
from its inception, the sorority's national service programs have evolved to
meet the critical societal needs of the time; and
WHEREAS,
Zeta Phi Beta continues a rich tradition of service and fellowship and the
outstanding accomplishments of this fine organization are worthy of
recognition.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body commend the members of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority for their service to the
community and the country.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Zeta Phi Beta
Sorority.
