A RESOLUTION


Honoring the life and memory of Mr. A. Felton Jenkins, Jr.; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens with the passing of Mr. A. Felton Jenkins, Jr., on January 1, 2011; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Jenkins was born on January 18, 1941, in Madison, Georgia, and was the beloved son of A. Felton Jenkins and Jimmie Davis Jenkins; and

WHEREAS, he graduated from Morgan County High School, where he was a four-year letterman on the football team, played on three Georgia state championship teams, was an All-State halfback and team captain, and was part of the legendary program that won 45 games and lost only three times; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Jenkins earned bachelor's and law degrees from the University of Georgia, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Omicron Delta Kappa, and began his legal career in 1965 with the King & Spalding law firm, where he served as co-chair of the firm's litigation section and retired in 1992 as a senior partner; and

WHEREAS, he was united in love and marriage for 44 wonderful years to Julie Green Jenkins, and was blessed with three fine children, Felton III, Emily, and Alan; two loving grandchildren, Sarah and Thomas; and is survived by his sister, Virginia, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends; and

WHEREAS, during his legal career, he argued before the United States Supreme Court and the Federal Circuit Court of appeals, was named a Life Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and The State Bar of Georgia, served on The State Bar of Georgia's Board of Governors, and co-authored the important legal book, Georgia Civil Procedure Forms; and

WHEREAS, he served as the Vice Chairman of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia, chair of the Georgia Justice Project, president of the Atlanta Chapter of the American Cancer Society, and chairman of the Madison-Morgan Cultural Center; and

WHEREAS, a man of deep and abiding faith, Mr. Jenkins was an active member of Madison First United Methodist Church, where he served as a trustee and taught Sunday school; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Jenkins was a great supporter of his alma mater, serving as chair of the University of Georgia's Law School Board of Visitors, secretary of the UGA Foundation, and a member of the UGA Strategic Planning Group; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Jenkins served on the Georgia Agricultural Exposition Authority, the Georgia Appellate Judicial Selection Commission, the Georgia Judicial Process Review Commission, and the Georgia Joint Study Commission on Revenue Structure; and

WHEREAS, an avid adventurer, Mr. Jenkins climbed Mt. Hood and Mt. Kilimanjaro, trekked to the South Base Camp of Mt. Everest, and completed the 33 mile Milford Track in New Zealand.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body join in honoring the life and memory of Mr. A. Felton Jenkins, Jr., and express their deepest and most sincere regret at his passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Mr. A. Felton Jenkins, Jr.
