RESOLUTION
Honoring
the life and memory of Mr. John H. Lewis, Sr.; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens
with the passing of Mr. John H. Lewis, Sr., on September 20, 2009;
and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Lewis was born on January 21, 1922, and he served as a guardian of this
nation's freedom and liberty with bravery and courage during World War II;
and
WHEREAS,
a faithful servant to his community, Mr. Lewis fought his entire life to improve
the lives of others, attending every Atlanta City Council meeting since he moved
to the area in 1945; and
WHEREAS,
he lobbied for important and ground-breaking legislation on behalf of the people
of Atlanta, and his efforts helped improve the rights of Atlanta's sanitation
workers and taxi drivers, established higher standards for the equipment issued
to police officers, and brought horse-drawn carriage rides to downtown;
and
WHEREAS,
his advocacy and determination made a difference in countless lives, and
throughout his life, Mr. Lewis earned the respect and admiration of many city
and state officials and political leaders; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Lewis was as an original search team member for the Missing & Murdered
Children of Atlanta group, an organization which later became the Metro Crisis
Response Team; and
WHEREAS,
he was united in love and marriage for 60 wonderful years to the late Thelma
Culpepper, a union which blessed him with six children, John II, Collette,
Nawanna, Sunshine, Veronica, and Aretha; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Lewis leaves behind many who will cherish his memory and the wonderful times
shared, including 14 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and many other
relatives and dear friends; and
WHEREAS,
he was a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for
integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness, and, by the example he made of
his life, he made this world a better place in which to live; and
WHEREAS,
a compassionate and generous man, Mr. Lewis will long be remembered for his
community service and advocacy, and this loyal father, grandfather, neighbor,
and friend will be missed by all who had the great fortune of knowing
him.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body join in honoring the life and memory of Mr. John H. Lewis, Sr., and
express their deepest and most sincere regret at his passing.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of
Mr. John H. Lewis, Sr.
