RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Twiggs County on the occasion of its bicentennial anniversary;
and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Twiggs County was formed on November 14, 1809, after a large number of area
citizens desired to break away from the growing Wilkinson County;
and
WHEREAS,
one of the oldest counties in Middle Georgia, the county's name was derived from
the illustrious hero, Major General John Twiggs, who represented Georgia during
the Revolution; and
WHEREAS,
in 1810, the Georgia State Legislature established the City of Marion as the
county seat, which was one of the leading towns in middle Georgia during that
time; and
WHEREAS,
by the 1840's the City of Macon was growing rapidly and attracting business and
professionals away from Marion, and the county seat was moved to Jeffersonville
in 1849; and
WHEREAS,
located in the center of Georgia, Twiggs County has a land area of approximately
365 square miles which is known to grow oak, gum, hickory, bay, and poplar
trees; and
WHEREAS,
the soil in Twiggs County is rich with minerals and the area is one of the chief
kaolin producing regions in the United States; and
WHEREAS,
Twiggs County's oldest church is Stone Creek Church, which was formed in 1808,
while the county's first school, Twiggs County Academy, was established in 1816;
and
WHEREAS,
on December 13, 2009, residents and visitors will gather on the Twiggs County
Courthouse lawn to celebrate Twiggs County's bicentennial anniversary and honor
the county's rich history and tradition; and
WHEREAS,
throughout its 200 years, Twiggs County has been home to many talented and
dedicated men and women who have contributed substantially to the progress and
development of their community, its civic organizations, and the economic
vitality of the state; and
WHEREAS,
Twiggs County continues to look with optimism toward the future while keeping
the proud memory of its beginning close to its heart to share with succeeding
generations.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA that the members of
these bodies commend Twiggs County on its distinguished 200 year history and
join with the citizens and officials in celebrating its
bicentennial.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the public
and members of the press.
