A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending United States Secretary of Labor Mrs. Hilda Solis; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, on February 24, 2009, Mrs. Hilda Solis made history when she was confirmed as the Secretary of Labor of the United States, becoming the first Hispanic woman to hold this prestigious position; and

WHEREAS, this groundbreaking and monumental moment was made possible through Mrs. Solis's nomination by President Barack Obama; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Solis has diligently and conscientiously devoted innumerable hours of her time, talents, and energy toward advocating for working families; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Solis began her career in 1982, bettering her community and state by serving disadvantaged youth as director of the California Student Opportunity and Access Program; and

WHEREAS, during President Jimmy Carter's administration, Mrs. Solis served in the White House Office of Hispanic Affairs, working diligently to uplift the Hispanic American community and promote the issues facing Hispanic American individuals; and

WHEREAS, she diligently and conscientiously served in the California State Assembly from 1992 to 1994, holding the honorable distinction as the first Hispanic woman elected to the California State Senate; and

WHEREAS, between 2001 and 2009, Mrs. Solis was a member of the United States House of Representatives, playing a vital role in leadership and displaying deep personal commitment to the welfare of the citizens of the 32nd congressional district of California; and
WHEREAS, her foresight, vision, and leadership skills have earned her the respect of her colleagues and associates, and her commitment to the workers of this nation is worthy of recognition.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend Mrs. Hilda Solis on her stellar achievements, extend their most heartfelt gratitude for her many contributions to the United States, and congratulate her upon her history making appointment as Secretary of Labor of the United States.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mrs. Hilda Solis.
