A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT


To amend Part 1 of Article 16 of Chapter 2 of Title 20 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to school attendance in elementary and secondary education, so as to enact the "Dropout Deterrent Act"; to provide for a short title; to revise the age of mandatory education; to provide for related matters; to provide an effective date; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA:

SECTION 1.
This Act shall be known and may be cited as the "Dropout Deterrent Act."

SECTION 2.
Part 1 of Article 16 of Chapter 2 of Title 20 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to school attendance in elementary and secondary education, is amended by revising subsection (a) of Code Section 20-2-690.1, relating to mandatory education for children, as follows:
"(a) Mandatory attendance in a public school, private school, or home school program shall be required for children between their sixth and sixteenth seventeenth birthdays. Such mandatory attendance shall not be required where the child has successfully completed all requirements for a high school diploma."

SECTION 3.
This Act shall become effective on July 1, 2012.

SECTION 4.
All laws and parts of laws in conflict with this Act are repealed.
