A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT


To amend an Act placing the coroner of Douglas County on a salary in lieu of a fee basis of compensation, approved March 28, 1961 (Ga. L. 1961, p. 2511), as amended, particularly by an Act approved March 13, 1990 (Ga. L. 1990, p. 3768), so as to change the compensation of the coroner; to set the compensation of deputy coroners; to provide for the board to increase the compensation of the coroner and any deputy coroners; to provide for approval of contracts; to provide for an effective date; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA:

SECTION 1.
An Act placing the coroner of Douglas County on a salary in lieu of a fee basis of compensation, approved March 28, 1961 (Ga. L. 1961, p. 2511), as amended, particularly by an Act approved March 13, 1990 (Ga. L. 1990, p. 3768), is amended by revising Section 1 as follows:

"SECTION 1.
In lieu of all fees, costs, perquisites, and emoluments of whatever kind and nature now or hereafter allowed by law to coroners for services as such, the coroner of Douglas County is placed on a salary of $31,114.00 per annum, payable in equal monthly installments from the funds of Douglas County."

SECTION 2.
Said Act is further amended by adding new Sections 2 through 5 to read as follows:

"SECTION 2.
The compensation of deputy coroners is hereby set as follows: the first deputy coroner shall be compensated in the amount of $5,000.00 per annum, and any additional deputy coroners who may be appointed by the coroner shall each be compensated in the amount of $2,500.00 per annum, which shall be paid in equal monthly installments from the funds of Douglas County.

SECTION 3.
The Douglas County Board of Commissioners is authorized to increase the compensation of the coroner and the deputy coroners, if any.

SECTION 4.
All third-party contracts and obligations of the coroner shall be first approved by the Douglas County Board of Commissioners in order to bind the funds of Douglas County.

SECTION 5.
The Douglas County Board of Commissioners is authorized to set and modify the budget of the Douglas County Coroner's Office."

SECTION 3.
This Act shall become effective on January 1, 2010.

SECTION 4.
All laws and parts of laws in conflict with this Act are repealed.
