SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 86

COMMEMORATING JULY 30, 2016 AS THE 60TH ANNIVERSARYOF "IN GOD WE TRUST" AS THE OFFICIAL MOTTO OF THE UNITED STATES.



WHEREAS,this year marks the 60th anniversary of when President Eisenhower signed a law making "In God We Trust" the official Motto of the United States after a joint resolution by the 84th Congress; and

WHEREAS,the date he signed the law was July 30, 1956; and

WHEREAS, our National Motto has been referenced by presidents, inscribed on our currency, and is found in the fourth verse of The Star Spangled Banner; and

WHEREAS,God is acknowledged in our Pledge of Allegiance, and has been the source of America's hope and confidence since its inception; and

WHEREAS,dependence upon God and the integration of a divine Creator into American life even predates our Founding Documents; and

WHEREAS,the courts have consistently upheld the Motto as constitutional and something clearly NOT in violation of the First Amendment rights guaranteed to all Americans; and

WHEREAS,in November 2011, the United States House of Representatives passed House Resolution 13 in a landslide vote (396-9) to reaffirm "In God We Trust" as the official Motto of the United States, AND encouraged its overt display in schools and public buildings; and

WHEREAS, "In God We Trust" was first printed on United States currency during the presidency of Abraham Lincoln;

NOW, THEREFORE:

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the 148th General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the House of Representatives concurring therein, that July 30, 2016 be commemorated as the 60th Anniversary of the adoption of "In God We Trust" as the official Motto of the United States.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that in the spirit of our National Motto, our citizens be encouraged to serve each other as we recognize that our rights come from God and that government is the protector of those rights.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED thatin the spirit of our National Motto, we renew our commitment to work together to ensure that everyone enjoys the "unalienable rights" of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, as proclaimed in our Declaration of Independence.


SYNOPSIS

This Resolution commemorates July 30, 2016 as the 60th Anniversary of "In God We Trust" as the official motto of the United States.
