DELAWARE STATE SENATE

148th GENERAL ASSEMBLY

SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 53

RECOGNIZING J.T. CARTER, CHARLIE THOMAS, AND ERNEST WRIGHT FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO MUSIC HISTORY.



WHEREAS, The Crests were an American doo-wop group, formed by bass vocalist J. T. Carter in the mid-1950s; and

WHEREAS, J.T. Carter was the first African American to form an interracial vocal group in the United States; and

WHEREAS, J.T. Carter and The Crests recorded "16 Candles," which rose to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1959ญญญญญ and sold more than one million copies, followed by several other Top 40 hits, including, "The Angels Listened In," "Step By Step," "Six Nights a Week;" A Year Ago Tonight," and "Trouble In Paradise;" and

WHEREAS, J.T. Carter and The Crests were inducted into the United in Group Harmony Association Hall of Fame in 2000, The Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004, and the Doo-Wop Hall of Fame of America in 2008; and

WHEREAS, J.T. Carter continues to bring joy to generations of new and old fans through the years, carrying on the traditional sound of the original "Crests;" 

WHEREAS, The Drifters are a long-lasting American doo-wop and R & B/soul vocal group; and

WHEREAS, Charlie Thomas was one of the original Drifters, having been recruited to join the group because of his exceptional voice; and

WHEREAS, The Drifters served to link R&B with sixties soul music; and

WHEREAS, Charlie Thomas and The Drifters released "There Goes My Baby" "Save the Last Dance for Me," "Up On the Roof," "This Magic Moment," "Under the Boardwalk," "There Goes My Baby," and "Dance with Me;" and

WHEREAS, Charlie Thomas and the Drifters were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988, and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1998; and

WHEREAS, Ernest Wright was one of the original founding members of "The Imperials," (that became known as "Little Anthony and the Imperials"); and is often credited with starting the sound of street corner a cappella music in New York City in the late fifties; and

WHEREAS, The Imperials launched their career in 1958 with one of the biggest records of the year, "Tears On My Pillow;" and many more hits followed including, "Two Kinds of People in the World," "I'm on the Outside Looking In," "Going Out of My Head," "Hurt So Bad," "I Miss You So," "Take Me Back," "Hurt," and "Shimmy, Shimmy, Ko-Ko Bop;" and

WHEREAS, Ernest Wright and Anthony and the Imperials were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1999, the Long Island Music Hall of Fame in 2006, the Hit Parade Hall of Fame in 2007, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009; and

WHEREAS, Ernest Wright continues to tour with Little Anthony and the Imperials, bringing their legendary music to audiences around the world;

NOW, THEREFORE:

BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the 148th General Assembly, the House of Representatives concurring herein, welcomes J.T. Carter, Charlie Thomas and Ernest Wright to the Delaware General Assembly; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the 148th General Assembly, on behalf of the citizens of Delaware, expresses gratitude to J.T. Carter, Charlie Thomas and Ernest Wright for their many contributions to music history and for bringing years of enjoyment to their many fans.


SYNOPSIS

This Senate Concurrent Resolution recognizes, and expresses gratitude to, J.T. Carter. Charlie Thomas, and Ernest Wright for their many outstanding contributions to music history.
