COMMEMORATING THE WEEK OF MARCH 13 THROUGH MARCH 19 OF 2016 AS DELAWARE AG WEEK |
WHEREAS, the history of Delaware has been shaped, and continues to be shaped, by people working in the proud tradition of agriculture; and
WHEREAS,agriculture is Delaware's number one and most vital industry, with production agriculture alone adding more than $1.3 billion to the state's economy each year; and
WHEREAS,agriculture provides 30,000 Delaware jobs throughout the farm and food chain, including farmers, farm workers, scientists, processors, shippers and retailers; and
WHEREAS,thanks to Delaware's aggressive farmland preservation program more than 116,000 acres, or 22% of farmland in Delaware, have been permanently preserved; and
WHEREAS,Delaware has more than 2,400 farms; and
WHEREAS,Farming is Delaware's single largest land use, with 40 percent of state land in agriculture; and
WHEREAS,American agriculture builds on centuries of progress by constantly seeking advances in science, research, technology, production, and marketing to meet the demands of changing consumer needs and complex world markets; and
WHEREAS,Delaware's agricultural heritage is a celebration of its food, its land, and its people and is essential to the strength and vitality of our great state.
NOW, THEREFORE:
BE IT RESOLVED by Senate of the 148th General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the House of Representatives concurring therein, that we hereby commemorate the week of March 13-19, 2016 as Delaware Ag Week and we urge all Delawareans to celebrate and to learn more about Delaware's modern agricultural industry, and to pay tribute to the farmers, the agricultural community, and the educators who provide the research and the education so vital to sustaining our agricultural industry.
