SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 38

CONTINUING TO RAISE AWARENESS THAT THE MONTH OF MAY IS MELANOMA AND SKIN CANCER DETECTION AND PREVENTION MONTH IN DELAWARE.



WHEREAS, since 2009, May has been permanently designated in the Delaware Code as Melanoma and Skin Care Cancer Detection and Prevention Month in Delaware; and

WHEREAS, it continues to be important to raise awareness of this too often deadly form of cancer; and

WHEREAS, exposure to ultraviolet rays is the most significant environmental factor which leads to cancer; and

WHEREAS, melanoma is curable if detected and treated in its early stages; and

WHEREAS, when detected early, approximately 95% of the cancer cells leading to melanoma can be cured; and

WHEREAS, melanoma accounts for only four percent of all skin cancer cases, but over 79% of skin cancer related deaths; and

WHEREAS, skin cancer in general affects one in five Americans, resulting in more than one million new cases diagnosed each year; and

WHEREAS, there is approximately a 3% annual increase in the number of melanoma cases each year; and

WHEREAS, there is estimated to be 8,700 melanoma related deaths this year; and

WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society estimates that in 2012 there will be 280 newly diagnosed cases of melanoma in Delaware and over 65,000 newly diagnosed cases of melanoma nationally; and

WHEREAS, melanoma is the third most common cancer affecting people aged 20-39; and

WHEREAS, May is recognized across the United States as National Melanoma and Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month.

NOW THEREFORE:

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the 146th General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the House concurring therein, that there is a continuing need to raise awareness that the month of May is Melanoma and Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month in Delaware.


SYNOPSIS

This Resolution continues to raise awareness that the month of May is Melanoma and Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month in Delaware.
