SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 214
PROCLAIMING JUNE 17, 2026, AS "DAY OF SERVICE" IN THE STATE OF DELAWARE.
WHEREAS, service is a hallmark of the American character and has the unique ability to bring people of all backgrounds, generations, and geographic locations together to meet our nation’s most pressing challenges; and
WHEREAS, AmeriCorps programs serve as a pipeline for civic leadership, workforce development, and long-term community engagement by equipping individuals with the skills and experience needed to continue serving their communities beyond their term of service; and
WHEREAS, AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps Seniors programs provide opportunities for 200,000 Americans annually to build resilient and thriving communities through volunteerism at nonprofits, schools, public agencies, and community and faith-based organizations across the country; and
WHEREAS, the AmeriCorps Seniors Foster Grandparent Program served 240 children in 2025, totaling 32,000 hours of volunteer service; and
WHEREAS, AmeriCorps provided more than $6.6 million in federal funding to support cost-effective community solutions, working hand in hand with local partners to empower individuals to help communities tackle their toughest challenges; and
WHEREAS, this investment in federal funding provided opportunities for 1,322 members and volunteers to participate in national service in Delaware; and
WHEREAS, Delaware AmeriCorps members and volunteers serve in over 200 locations statewide, including schools, food banks, homeless shelters, health clinics, youth centers, veterans’ facilities, and other nonprofit and faith-based organizations; and
WHEREAS, volunteers of all ages including youth, students, working professionals, older adults, and veterans play a vital role in strengthening Delaware’s communities and supporting the sustainability of nonprofit organizations; and
WHEREAS, the State Office of Volunteerism documents more than 700,000 volunteer service hours annually and works to expand access to service opportunities through partnerships with nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, government agencies, and the private sector; and
WHEREAS, volunteers report that volunteering enriches their sense of purpose; and
WHEREAS, Delawareans should be celebrated and encouraged to give back to their communities across the State because volunteers are essential to the success and sustainability of Delaware nonprofit organizations.
NOW, THEREFORE:
BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the 153rd General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the House of Representatives concurring therein, that June 17, 2026, is hereby proclaimed “Day of Service” in the State of Delaware.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that employers across Delaware are encouraged to support employee volunteerism, including offering time and resources for participation in service activities that strengthen communities.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Delawareans are encouraged to share their service experiences to inspire others and promote a culture of volunteerism across the State.
