SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 193

DESIGNATING THE MONTH OF MAY 2026 AS "LUPUS AWARENESS MONTH" IN THE STATE OF DELAWARE.

WHEREAS, lupus (systemic lupus erythematosus) is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes the immune system to attack its own tissues, and affects the skin, joints, heart, lung, kidneys, blood cells, and brain; and 

WHEREAS, an estimated 1.5 million Americans have a form of lupus, and it is estimated that there 16,000 new cases of lupus per year; and

WHEREAS, most people with lupus develop the disease between the ages of 15 and 44, but children younger than age 15 may also develop lupus; and

WHEREAS, 1 in 3 lupus patients suffer from multiple autoimmune diseases; and 

WHEREAS, the cause of lupus is unknown, and there is no known cure; and

WHEREAS, it is believed that between 10 and 15 percent of people with lupus will die prematurely due to complications of lupus, but, due to improved diagnosis and disease management, most people with the disease will go on to live a normal lifespan; and

WHEREAS, people with lupus can experience significant symptoms, such as pain, extreme fatigue, hair loss, cognitive issues, and physical impairments that affect every facet of their lives, and, while some may not experience visible symptoms, many individuals with lupus suffer from cardiovascular disease, strokes, disfiguring rashes, and painful joints; and

WHEREAS, 90 percent of all people living with lupus are females, and lupus is 2 to 3 times more prevalent among people of color than white individuals; and 

WHEREAS, the month of May has been recognized as National Lupus Awareness Month.

NOW, THEREFORE:

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the 153rd General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the House of Representatives concurring therein, to recognize the importance of Lupus awareness, and therefore designate May 2026 as “Lupus Awareness Month” in the State of Delaware. 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that expanded efforts to keep Delaware residents properly informed about Lupus symptom recognition and treatment are encouraged.

This concurrent resolution designates May 2026 as "Lupus Awareness Month" in the State of Delaware and encourages expanded efforts to keep Delaware residents properly informed about Lupus symptom recognition and treatment.
