147th GENERAL ASSEMBLY

SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 19

PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF MAY AS "MAMMOGRAPHY MONTH."



WHEREAS, one in eight women in the United States will have breast cancer in their lifetime; and

WHEREAS, in 2013, approximately 770 women in Delaware will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and approximately 120 will die from the effects of the disease; and

WHEREAS, the Delaware Cancer Consortium recommends yearly mammography screenings for women beginning at age 40; 98 percent of women survive a minimum of five years with early detection and treatment of breast cancer; and

WHEREAS, , mammograms are still the most-effective means of detecting early-stage breast cancer; and

WHEREAS, 6,373 women were screened by the Women's Mobile Health Screening Van from June 2005 � March 2013 and 3,617 of those women were uninsured and were able to be screened through Delaware's Screening for Life program; and

WHEREAS, the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, Inc., is the only statewide organization solely dedicated to addressing breast health issues in Delaware; the Coalition serves to raise awareness through outreach, education and support in helping to facilitate early detection and treatment of breast cancer.

NOW, THEREFORE:

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the 147th General Assembly, the House of Representatives concurring therein, thatMay, 2016 is declared MAMMOGRAPHY MONTH in the State of Delaware,and encourage all women to practice good breast health and strongly urge women over 40 years of age to inquire about and receive a mammogram.


SYNOPSIS

This Concurrent Resolution proclaims May 2013 as "Mammography Month" in the State of Delaware.
