145th GENERAL ASSEMBLY

HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 43

HONORING THE LONGSTANDING PARTNERSHIP IN PUBLIC SERVICE BETWEEN DELAWARE STATE UNIVERSITY AND THE STATE OF DELAWARE.



WHEREAS, Delaware State University ("DSU") and the State of Delaware have established a long-lasting partnership in public service; and

WHEREAS, the partnership has strengthened Delaware communities and improved the quality of life for Delawareans through DSU's designation as a Land Grant Institution; and

WHEREAS, the Board of Trustees of Delaware State University has selected Dr. Harry L. Williams as the tenth (10th) President of DSU; and

WHEREAS, President Williams seeks for DSU to continue strategically serving the state of Delaware through its 54 undergraduate, 24 graduate and 5 doctoral degree programs;and

WHEREAS, DSU, while embracing its roots as a historically black college, seeks to become a state university of first choice for all Delawareans through its outstanding teaching, research and service; and

WHEREAS, President Williams has appointed a Blue Ribbon Commission to reach out to all stakeholders to help create a new vision and set of core values for DSU; and

WHEREAS, DSU is making a significant contribution in research areas such as optics and hydrogen storage, commanding millions of dollars in grants; and

WHEREAS DSU is impressively responding to the national challenge of educating in the STEM areas (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) by increasing STEM degree graduates 270% since 1993, and by partnering with the National Science Foundation, NASA, the Department of Defense, USDA, and many others to fund more than $41 million in initiatives designed to help students into the STEM pipeline and thereby strengthen the professional workforce of Delaware and the nation.

NOW, THEREFORE

BE IT RESOLVED by the members of the House of Representatives of the 145th General Assembly that Delaware State University is hereby recognized for serving the State of Delaware with distinction, and is hereby applauded for its efforts, under its new President, to ensure that it will be an important economic engine and resource for high quality professional degrees for Delawareans.

BE IT FUTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution will be presented upon passage to Dr. Harry L. Williams, the President of Delaware State University, and to DSU's Board of Trustees.


SYNOPSIS

This Resolution celebrates the longstanding partnership in public service between Delaware State University and the State of Delaware, applauds DSU and its newly elected President for DSU's continued commitment to the partnership, and reaffirms the State's commitment to maintaining the partnership.
