HOUSE RESOLUTION NO.

RECOGNIZING APRIL 10, 2014, AS "AKA DAY AT THE DELAWARE CAPITAL".



WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., was founded January 15, 1908, on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C., and has been in continuous existence for these 106 years; and

WHEREAS, Ethel Hedgeman Lyle, Anna Easter Brown, Beulah Burke, Lillian Burke, Marjorie Hill, Margaret Flagg Holmes, Lavinia Norman, Lucy Diggs Slowe, and Marie Woolfolk Taylor, established the first Greek-lettered organization established by and for African-American college-educated women; and

WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. represents a sisterhood of 260,000 members globally, with a strong leadership commitment to "Service to all Mankind," particularly in the African-American community; and

WHEREAS, the Zeta Omega, Epsilon Iota Omega, and Sigma Zeta Omega Chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.'s influence and civic contributions have brought about economic security, environmental sustainability, and addressed issues of poverty, health, social justice and spiritual change throughout Delaware, as well as nationally and internationally; and

WHEREAS, the Zeta Omega, Epsilon Iota Omega, and Sigma Zeta Omega Chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and its members are actively involved in our local communities through the Launching Emerging Young Leaders program for middle school girls; sponsoring Clothing Drives for the needy; hosting ongoing Voter Registration Campaigns; facilitating Health Care initiatives; and many other community focused endeavors.

NOW, THEREFORE:

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the 147th General Assembly of the State of Delaware, that April 10, 2014, shall be "AKA Day at the Delaware Capital."


SYNOPSIS

This resolution recognizes the historic nature and civic contribution of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and especially its Delaware chapters and declares April 10, 2014, to be "AKA Day at the Delaware Capital."
