146th GENERAL ASSEMBLY

HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 21

RECOGNIZING SUNDAY, JUNE 19, 2011 AS FATHER'S DAY IN DELAWARE AND COMMENDING ALL FATHERS FOR THEIR SUPPORT IN THEIR CHILDREN'S LIVES.



WHEREAS, Father's Day is celebrated across the United States on the third Sunday in June; and

WHEREAS, the idea of Father's Day was first proposed by Sonora Smart Dodd to honor her own father, a widower and Civil War veteran who raised six children by himself on a farm in Washington State; and

WHEREAS, President Calvin Coolidge, in 1924, supported the idea of a National Father's Day; and

WHEREAS, President Lyndon Johnson signed a Presidential proclamation in 1966 declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day; and

WHEREAS, Father's Day is a day set aside to recognize the important contributions fathers make to the lives of their children by instilling confidence, teaching skills, encouraging interests, and providing love and protection; and

WHEREAS, Sigmund Freud was quoted as saying "I cannot think of any need in childhood as strong as the need for a father's protection"; and

WHEREAS, it is appropriate that the members of the House of Representatives of the 146th General Assembly honor the State's fathers � be they natural fathers, adoptive fathers, or individuals who have fulfilled the role of father � for their crucial participation in the lives of our State's children.

NOW, THEREFORE:

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the 146th General Assembly of the State of Delaware, that Sunday, June 19th is recognized as Father's Day in the State of Delaware, and on that date fathers who have been involved in many significant ways in the lives of their children shall be honored for those efforts.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that on Father's Day all citizens of the State are encouraged to reflect upon and express appreciation for the many contributions made by their own fathers.
