147th GENERAL ASSEMBLY

HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 10

PROCLAIMING THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 14 THROUGH OCTOBER 18, 2013 AS "MEDIATION WEEK" IN THE STATE OF DELAWARE.

WHEREAS, the Alternative Dispute Resolution Section of the Delaware State Bar Association (the "Alternative Dispute Resolution Section") promotes the advancement of dispute resolution services available to citizens, families, businesses and government bodies; and

WHEREAS, with the continuing efforts of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Section, lawyers, the judiciary, and public bodies of the State, among others, are demonstrating a growing commitment to innovative dispute resolution options when faced with complex disputes; and

WHEREAS, the Alternative Dispute Resolution Section supports education of the Bench, the Bar, law students, and the public on the advantages of dispute resolution options and encourages collaborative practice; and

WHEREAS, the Alternative Dispute Resolution Section supports the use of mediation, arbitration and alternative procedures to resolve disputes between parties, as these procedures encourage parties to address their differences in a civil and cost-effective manner; and

WHEREAS, among other areas, mediation practices and skills are being applied in the workplace by leaders and supervisors who have embraced the power and efficiency of open communication and collaborative problem-solving; and

WHEREAS, mediators and other dispute resolution practitioners, through their expertise in helping stakeholders find solutions to important issues, have demonstrated the value of mediation and alternative dispute resolution; and

WHEREAS, mediation and the principles and practices that it embodies are a critical tool for issue resolution between companies, individuals, groups, and even neighbors; and

WHEREAS, the State of Delaware continues to be a national leader in such efforts;

NOW, THEREFORE:

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate and the House of Representatives of the 147^th General Assembly of the State of Delaware, with the approval of the Governor, that the Week of October 14-18, 2013 is hereby recognized as "Mediation Week" in the State of Delaware.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the General Assembly and the Governor do hereby call this observance to the attention of the Delaware Bench and Bar and the citizens of the State of Delaware.

SYNOPSIS

This Joint Resolution proclaims the week of October 14-18, 2013 as "Mediation Week" in the State of Delaware.
