HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 95

RECOGNIZING THE MONTH OF MARCH AS MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS MONTH IN DELAWARE.

WHEREAS, Multiple Sclerosis (referred to in this resolution as “MS”) is a chronic and unpredictable disease affecting the nervous system; and

WHEREAS, symptoms of MS range from numbness and tingling in the extremities to blindness, paralysis, and cognitive dysfunction; and

WHEREAS, the progress, severity, and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted; and

WHEREAS, there is no laboratory test available that can definitively diagnose MS; and

WHEREAS, most people with MS experience their first symptoms and are diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 50, although individuals of any age may be diagnosed; and

WHEREAS, an estimated 2.3 million people worldwide are affected by MS; and

WHEREAS, female individuals have a higher MS burden than male individuals; and

WHEREAS, while MS is not directly inherited, studies show that there are genetic and, probably, environmental factors that make certain individuals, more predisposed; and

WHEREAS, the exact cause of MS is still unknown and there is no cure; and

WHEREAS, education is a continuing need among everyone involved with MS, from medical professionals to patients, family, and friends; and

WHEREAS, The Multiple Sclerosis Association of America recognizes March as Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month; and

WHEREAS, the goals of Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month are to acknowledge those who have been diagnosed with MS, invite people to join the movement to end MS, encourage everyone to educate themselves on the discourse and research surrounding MS, and to recognize those who have dedicated their time and talent to help promote MS research and programs.

NOW, THEREFORE:

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the 152nd General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the Senate concurring therein, that March 2024 is hereby designated as “Multiple Sclerosis Month,” and the State Legislature calls upon Delawareans to observe this month by learning about Multiple Sclerosis and supporting individuals who have been medically diagnosed with MS.
