148th GENERAL ASSEMBLY

HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 87

RECOGNIZING AND HONORING DELAWARE TECHNICAL AND COMMUNITY COLLEGE ON THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF ITS FOUNDING ON JUNE 9, 1966.



WHEREAS, Delaware Technical and Community College will celebrate 50 years of providing access, opportunity, hope, and excellence to Delawareans on June 9, 2016; and

WHEREAS, Delaware Technical and Community College has provided over 214,000 individual Delawareans with affordable access to higher education through high-quality academic and training programs and awarded over 46,000 degrees and certificates that are responsive to local labor market and community needs over the past 50 years; and

WHEREAS, Delaware Technical and Community College served 18,057 Delawareans last year alone and conferred 1,826 awards to 1,706 Delaware graduates; and

WHEREAS, Delaware Technical and Community College has connected Delawareans with good paying jobs and provided a skilled workforce for Delaware businesses for 50 years; and

WHEREAS, Delaware Technical and Community College programs include hands-on learning, internships and work-based learning experiences to prepare students for the workplace; and

WHEREAS, 95% of Delaware Technical and Community College's 2015 graduates were employed within six months of graduation by 667 Delaware businesses and earned average annual wages of $37,770; and

WHEREAS, Delaware Technical and Community College has a 50-year history as an educational leader and valued partner in fields that support the State's economic development initiatives and the well-being of Delawareans; and

WHEREAS, $1.1 billion dollars in income was contributed to the State's economy in 2013-14 as a direct result of Delaware Technical Community College and its students; and

WHEREAS, due to the financial support provided by the State of Delaware and private donors, nearly 70% of Delaware Technical and Community College students graduate debt-free as the result of affordable tuition, the Student Excellence Equals Degree Scholarship, donor-funded scholarships, and other financial aid funding; and

WHEREAS, Delaware Technical and Community College currently has 71 nationally accredited programs and 216 connected degrees with four-year institutions; and

WHEREAS, more than 1,300 industry experts serve on 84 advisory councils to ensure Delaware Technical and Community College students have the skills necessary to be job-ready upon graduation; and

WHEREAS, Delaware Technical and Community College's expansion of dual enrollment programs has enabled students to earn college credits while in high school and enter high-demand educational and career pathways in areas such as manufacturing, engineering, culinary and hospitality, business and finance, information technology, education, and health science; and

WHEREAS, in addition to serving Delaware's high school students, nearly 1,300 youth statewide attended Delaware Technical and Community College summer camps last year to shape career exploration, special interests, and college aspirations;

NOW, THEREFORE:

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the 148th General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the Senate concurring therein, that the State Legislature does hereby recognize and congratulate Delaware Technical and Community College, its students, alumni, faculty, staff, and administration on the occasion of its 50th anniversary.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature also extend its sincere and heartfelt gratitude to Delaware Technical and Community College for providing Delawareans with opportunities to obtain a better life for themselves and their families through gainful employment, and by providing Delaware's business and industry with a competent, highly trained workforce.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitably prepared copy of this Resolution shall be presented to Dr. Mark T. Brainard, President of Delaware Technical and Community College, upon its enactment.
