146th GENERAL ASSEMBLY

HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 23

RECOGNIZING THE COMCAST FOUNDATION'S LEADERS AND ACHIEVERS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM AND ITS DELAWARE RECIPIENTS FOR 2011.



WHEREAS, young people today need positive role models among their peers who demonstrate a strong commitment to community service and display civic leadership abilities; and

WHEREAS, the Comcast Foundation, since its establishment in June 1999, has given more than $77 million to non-profit organizations, including those benefitting Delaware's citizens; and

WHEREAS, every year, Comcast and the Comcast Foundation ask high school principals and guidance counselors to collaborate in identifying the best and the brightest high school seniors in their communities, including those across the State of Delaware, in order to recognize the students who best exemplify the ideals of the Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program ("the Program"); and

WHEREAS, the Program seeks to motivate young people to achieve their potential, encourage involvement in their schools, and act as catalysts for positive change in their communities; and

WHEREAS, the Program awards recipients a one-time grant of $1,000 to be used toward their pursuit of higher education and, since 2001, has recognized more than 13,300 students around the country and given away more than $13.4 million in scholarship grants; and

WHEREAS, twenty-two Delaware high school seniors earned the award for 2011 for the Program, namely:

Theresa Fasullo;

Caitlin Forte;

Rachel Fry;

Melany Justice;

Katherine Kaczowka;

Margaret Karmeris;

Chad Killen;

JinAhLee;

Ashley Matos;

Charinel Matos;

Kayla Miller;

Andrew Minutella;

Zanele Munyikwa;

Brandon Pyne;

Rebecca Russell;

Jonathan Schwinn;

Sarah Shifflette;

Emily Spiegel;

Jordan Vazquez; and

Nicole Walsh.

NOW, THEREFORE:

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the 146th General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the Senate concurring therein, that the members do hereby recognize and commend all of the winners of the 2011 Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program in Delaware for their well-deserved recognition.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the members do hereby extend their gratitude to Comcast and the Comcast Foundation for its generosity in encouraging and rewarding through scholarship grants the leaders and achievers of communities throughout our State.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that suitable copies of this Resolution shall be provided to the individual winners of the 2011 Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program in Delaware.
