   Relative to the suspension of Senator Ronald S. Calderon.


	LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST
             HOUSE OR SENATE RESOLUTIONS DO NOT CONTAIN A DIGEST



   WHEREAS, Public office is a public trust; and
   WHEREAS, That public trust is eroded by actions that appear to
place the private interests of public officials above the public
good; and
   WHEREAS, The California State Senate has established Standards of
Conduct for the Senate; and
   WHEREAS, The Standards of Conduct specifically state that no
Senator or officer or employee of the Senate should accept anything
from anyone that would interfere with the exercise of his or her
independent judgment; and
   WHEREAS, The Standards of Conduct further state that no Senator
should use the prestige of his or her office, and no officer or
employee of the Senate should use the status of his or her position,
for material or financial gain or private benefit; and
   WHEREAS, The Standards of Conduct further state that each Senator
and each officer and employee of the Senate shall uphold the
Constitution of California and the Constitution of the United States
and shall adhere to the spirit and the letter of the laws, rules, and
regulations governing officeholder conduct; and
   WHEREAS, The Standards of Conduct further state that each Senator
and each officer and employee of the Senate shall conduct himself or
herself in the performance of his or her duties in a manner that does
not discredit the Senate; and
   WHEREAS, The public trust and the honor and integrity of the
California State Senate must be upheld by the Senate and by its
Members, officers, and employees; and
   WHEREAS, The ability of the California State Senate to operate as
a legislative body must be vigorously protected; and
   WHEREAS, Senator Ronald S. Calderon has violated the public trust
and undermined the honor and integrity of the California State
Senate; now, therefore, be it
   Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, a majority of
the membership concurring, That the Senate hereby suspends Senator
Ronald S. Calderon from exercising any of the powers of his office as
a Member of the Senate until such time as his pending criminal
indictment has been adjudicated.
