Relative to Vietnamese Lunar New Year.


LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST


SR 10, Nguyen.

WHEREAS, Tết, short for Tết Nguyên Đán, is the Vietnamese Lunar New Year, the most important holiday in Vietnamese culture celebrating the arrival of a new spring when families reunite, enjoy each other’s company, forget about the troubles of the previous year, and look forward to a better upcoming year; and
WHEREAS, Tết is observed on the first day of the first month of the Vietnamese Lunar Calendar and ranges between late January and mid-February on the Gregorian calendar. In 2023, Tết falls on January 22nd; and
WHEREAS, Tết Nguyên Đán is celebrated for three consecutive days. The first day is celebrated with family. The second day is spent visiting friends. The last and final day of Tết is celebrated by visiting temples, paying respect to ancestors by offering Ngủ Quả, five kinds of fruits, at a family altar, and paying respect to teachers; and
WHEREAS, Common traditions that take place during celebration of the Lunar New Year include distributing small red envelopes with small amounts of money, lantern festivals, lion dances, fireworks, cleaning of homes to remove bad luck, and religious ceremonies; and
WHEREAS, Lunar Year 2023 is the Year of the Cat on the Vietnamese Zodiac, from January 22nd, 2023, to February 9th, 2024; and
WHEREAS, Vietnamese families have three guardians for their kitchen called Ông Táo, or Kitchen Gods, and they believe that these Gods return to Heaven to present an annual report on all of the family members on the 23rd day of the lunar calendar’s 12th month. So, on the day of their departure, family members offer sacrifices to the Gods that they are believed to use on their journey; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, That the Senate joins Vietnamese Americans throughout the state in celebrating January 22, 2023, as the beginning of Tết Nguyên Đán, the Vietnamese Lunar New Year, the Year of the Cat, and extends best wishes for a peaceful and prosperous Lunar New Year to all Californians; and be it further
Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
