California Grown Flower Month.
This measure would proclaim June 2021 as California Grown Flower Month to recognize and honor the people who comprise the California grown flower industry for their dedication, productivity, and economic value to the state.

WHEREAS, California’s flower industry dates back to the late 1870s, when Theodosia B. Shepherd was inspired to sell calla lilies grown in her garden; and
WHEREAS, In 1890, the Domoto family established California’s first commercial flower farm in Oakland; and
WHEREAS, The business of selling flowers began to flourish and by the turn of the century most towns had at least one florist; and
WHEREAS, California has a year-round climate that is perfect for growing hundreds of varieties of flowers; and
WHEREAS, California flowers are grown from the County of San Diego, to the Inland Empire, to the Central Coast, and to the Oregon border; and
WHEREAS, California is the largest producing state of fresh cut flowers in the country, representing approximately 75 percent of all cut flowers grown in the United States; and
WHEREAS, California is the leading producer of lilies, irises, gerbera daisies, tulips, orchids, and cut foliage; and
WHEREAS, Much of the production of lilies, irises, and tulips is in the County of Humboldt, which is known for its ideal growing conditions, and is also where the legendary Stargazer lily was originally bred; and
WHEREAS, Approximately 50 percent of all California grown flowers are distributed to wholesale and retail customers in other states; and
WHEREAS, The economic activity of California flower farmers, wholesalers, retail florists, and grocery stores create nearly 150,000 jobs in the state; and
WHEREAS, The total annual economic impact of business activity created by California-grown flowers exceed $12 billion; and
WHEREAS, The economic activities of California grown flowers generate nearly $1 billion annually in local and state taxes; and
WHEREAS, It is appropriate for all Californians to recognize California grown flowers in providing such a bounty to our state and the nation; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly thereof concurring, That the Legislature recognizes and honors the people who comprise the California grown flower industry for their dedication, productivity, and economic value to the state and hereby proclaims the month of June 2021 as California Grown Flower Month; and be it further
Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
